COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Rehabilitated former LTTE soldiers will have the chance to participate in local politics, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said Sunday (July 8th) at a workshop in Diyatalawa attended by Sri Lankan ambassadors, high commissioners and consul generals.
Rajapaksa said the opportunities will not be confined to only the senior members and former LTTE leaders. He added that youth and rehabilitated former cadres in the north and east would be able to enlist to man new police stations established in the area.
Acknowledging that some security forces members may have committed crimes, the defence secretary insisted the Sri Lanka military has a strong record of compliance, as well as the means to investigate and punish anyone who has done something illegal.
